Gundam Evolution:V Gundam[1993]

Tue Aug 15, 2006, 5:37 AM
"Mobile Suit----V[Victory] Gundam" in full. With the franchise remained both successful and profitable,Sunrise still churn out Gundam series and also introduce new artists with Mr.Tomino believed that there's a need to go back to basic yet still set in the Gundam universe they had built up.Here's the story in summary:

U.C.0153,with the Earth government & Federal Military continued to plagued in corruption, many Spacenoids began to lose faith and even established an empire called Sun Skull with their latest Mobile Suits successfully crippled them.Their success had created casualties among the innocent people with some of them decided to fight back by forming a small organisation known as League Militaire to help Federal Military. The lead,Uso Edwin, was dragged into this war when he was near the latest V Gundam and repeated the same miracle as the previous Amuro Rey,Kamiyu Bidan,Judo Alstar & Seabook Arnold.

Believed to had strong New Type potential,Uso was persuaded and participated the war unwillingly with part of him hoped that he might one day reunited with his parents eventually by doing just that.Along the way,he also met orphans suffering the same loss such as Shakti & Katejeena with Katejeena acted like a sister figure while Shakti looked after the much younger orphans. In confusion, they lost Katejeena only to had her returned as the enemy with her received similar genetic modification as Four Murasame of "Z Gundam" to become enhanced human.

Uso later reunited with his mother who entrusted him with the latest V2 Gundam she designed as well as his father who led one of the fleets of League Militaire.Shakti was later taken by the enemy but she learned that she was the daughter of Queen Maria who wanted to ended war peacefully through a gigantic Angel Halo,a device that amplified the thoughts of numerous New Type's and somewhat brainwash the enemies so to had them laid down their arms peacefully.Unfortunately,League Militaire believed that it might strongly damaged the minds of the individuals too closed to it so a final showdown was inevitable.

As battles broke out around Angel Halo,Uso hoped to save Shakti, who wanted to end war by voicing her thought through Angel Halo, but with battles throughout all areas, she could only hope Uso could hear her voice and guide him towards her but not without having Uso to defeat Katejeena first.Angel Halo began to fall apart under the intense pressures and just when Uso thought all hopes were gone,he found Shakti protected by a protective sphere as she was laying peacefully inside. They later start afresh together as the Mobile Suits were laid to rust after lengthy disuse and Katejeena wander aimlessly searching for a place where she could belong, after she lost her memories & sight without realisng that she ran into Shakti briefly before she moved on.

Despite insisted on starting afresh,Mr.Tomino somehow squeezed in Hello,a soccer ball like mini computer which had appeared in the majority of the series and made it a mascot of the series too.Inserting Hello only left the impression that Mr.Tomino didn't start afresh as promised besides having a story that bored many viewers.Gundam series might had deep stories yet always managed to entertained viewers but "V Gundam" somewhat bored the majority of the viewers and the only thing that still attracted the viewers was the fact that it was directed by Mr.Tomino himself.Although he introduced a 13 years old lead character to emphasize the cruelty of war,Uso could be quite annoying at times as he struggled to make sense of the situations but it also made him the youngest pilots of Gundam series to date.

The mechanical designs also brought back the complex Core Block System used in "Gundam ZZ" but the miniaturisation of Mobile Suits somewhat made them appeared fragile, although this miniaturisation allowed them to install Minovski Drives that allowed V Gundam & V2 Gundam to defy gravity which could only be possible on the fortresses used to carry the Mobile Suits, since it required large generator to support the Minovski Drive and these Minovski Drives could not be install into old scaled Mobile Suits even after they miniaturised the drives. However,Minovski Particles could still be used to jam the radars even when not being used in the Minovski Drives to defy gravity.

At the same time,Mr.Tomino was later diagnosed with depression and he decided to take some time off until he felt he had overcame it which might more or less affected "V Gundam" itself. With the approaching 15th anniversary and Mr.Tomino took some time off,Sunrise felt that's the need to explore an alternate style for Gundam series hence the development of the rather controversial "Mobile Fighter Legend----G Gundam".

Side Note: Here's a brief origin of "New Type" magazine that was also connected to the Gundam series.Originally,"New Type" was a specialised magazine that only covered the Gundam series as well as some other Animes developed by Sunrise and they named it "New Type" to emphasized that they were always ahead of time. With Anime magazines increasing in number, the publisher,Kadokawa Shoten[Kadokawa Bookshop],decided to expand outside Animes by Sunrise to remained competitive with other magazines hence the "New Type" magazine everybody is familiar with today. That publisher also produced numerous sidestories of both Mangas & novel series revolved around Gundam series too.

So, G Gundam is next? One of the few I have actual experience with? Cool.

Hopefully, you may enjoy it so I will do my best to ensure it is comprehensive enough.

Hooray for my favorite Gundam series! :) Too bad it's also one of the most underated series of this long saga... :)

Despite the fact that there isn't anything REALLY new or a groundbreaking story; V Gundam stands out as my absolute favorite because of the great characters, the intense battle scenes and the emotive setting behind it.

I don't think Usso Ebbing is an annoying character, like that wussy of Kira Yamato (Athrun Zala was far a better character than him) or Judau Ashta during the first episodes of ZZ Gundam.

In fact, Usso must be one the best Gundam pilots ever, only behind Amuro Ray and/or Char Aznable... And without any fancy Zero System nor SEED mode! Also, he grew to be one of my favorite characters, he's just too strong and courageus for his short age.

You certainly have lots of good points here.May be I should have consulted you first.I do agree Kira can be too emotional at times but I always admire him for never run away from his responsibility despite having so many chance to back out of the war.He could have live in peace in "Mobile Suit----Gundam Seed: Destiny" yet he chose to walk back into the battlefield.

Athrun may be more in control but he had a tendency to be blinded by his own responsibility before Lacus asked him his true goal in joining Zaft.May have taken him a while but at least,he finally chose to leave Zaft under his own will in "Gundam Seed: Destiny" which more or less proved that he had improved in identifying his own priority.

The series may be a bit of a disappointment but at least, both Kira & Athrun had matured considerably especially how my brother joked about Kira being more like an ultimate cry baby instead of an ultimate Co-ordinator before.Hopefully,Sunrise would deliver a much better "Mobile Suit----Gundam Seed: Star Gazer" after the somewhat disappointing "Gundam Seed: Destiny".
