Gundam Evolution:Seed: Destiny[2004]C.E.73,after the last war,Earth & Plant enjoyed a short peace before a new group of Blue Cosmo sparked another war against the Co-ordinators.Their first objective was to steal the three latest Gundam's from Zaft but unknown to them,Zaft actually had one more Gundam not listed in their database.A fight was inevitable as Shin Asuka,the pilot of the unknown Impulse Gundam,tried to take back the stolen Gaia Gundam,Abyss Gundam & Chaos Gundam but in the end,Shin failed to take them back even with the assistance of his comrades,Ray The Barrel & Lunamaria Hawke.
Not willing to give up easily,the crew of the new ship,Minerva,pursued the thieves with Shin,Ray & Lunamaria on board along with Athrun Zala who happened to be in Plant before he ended up aboard in confusion.After the previous war,Athrun left Zaft and had been the bodyguard of Orb Representative,Cakalli Yula Athha,who was also in Plant to discuss some political issues as the neutral faction between Earth & Plant before the above incident had them boarded Minerva.
As Minerva was on pursuit,a group of renegade Zaft soldiers intend to drop Jenus 7 onto Earth as they were the supporters of the late Patrick Zala,the previous Zaft Representative,who believed that the existence of Naturals would only create more wars out of their fear & paranoia towards Co-ordinators.Zaft might had broken Jenus 7 into pieces upon its descent but the remaining pieces still devastated Earth quite badly in the end which eventually convinced Athrun to join Zaft again,after the Naturals decided to strike back against the Co-ordinators.
At the same time,Kira Yamato also decided to return to the battlefield in his Freedom Gundam after a group of renegade Zaft soldiers tried to assassinate Lacus Clyne who was seen as the threat by Gilbert Durandal,the current representative of Zaft & Co-ordinators,to his Destiny Plan.Basically,Representative Durandal's Destiny Plan involved assigning the role of each individual based on a person's genetic which basically labelled Naturals as the second class citizens,instead of being equal between the roles of the Naturals & the Co-ordinators.Initially,Athrun was skeptical about it but became suspicious as time passes especially after Lacus Clyne found the content of Destiny Plan.
Eventually,Kira,Athrun & Lacus challenged Representative Durandal over the ideals & the ideal world and despite being served under Representative Durandal and being the enemies to Kira & Athrun,Kira still invited Shin & Lunamaria to join them in the crusade of creating a better world after they had defeated Representative Durandal,with Lacus Clyne now the Representative of Zaft & Co-ordinators.
Despite the healthy start of the series,the show plummet into a plotless mess due to the financial fraud of two married senior staffs.Basically,the couples used the budget meant for the series for personal purposes hence sacrificed the quality of the shows drastically in many aspects,including the plot as they tried to compromise.Recycling the same animations may be a norm but at the later part of the shows involving Strike Freedom Gundam,Infinite Justice Gundam & Legend Gundam moving at high speed,they reused the same animations of Freedom Gundam,Justice Gundam & Providence Gundam respectively instead of developing the new ones.
To add salt into the injury,the ending was somewhat rushed so badly that it was best never had one at all but Sunrise let the couples redeemed themselves,before sending them to court,by developing an episode titled Final Plus,which was basically,the extended last episode with a more complete story & ending.If Sunrise owned a black list of Gundam series,"Mobile Suit----Gundam Seed: Destiny" will be one of them after "Mobile Suit----Gundam ZZ" & "Mobile Suit----Turn A Gundam".To win back the fans of "Mobile Suit----Gundam Seed" and ask for their forgiveness,Sunrise later developed a deep sidestory titled "Mobile Suit----Gundam Seed:Star Gazer".
Side Note: Besides the above scandal,the dispute between the voiceover of Cakalli and the production team over her role also affected the series,hence the drastic decline in apperance in the show.In fact,in Final Plus,Meyrin,Lunamaria's younger sister,even took Cakalli's place near the end besides having no dialogues for Cakalli when making the rather brief appearances.
