Gundam Evolution:The 08th MS Team[1996]

Wed Nov 15, 2006, 1:26 AM
"Mobile Suit----Gundam:The 08th MS Team" in full. While "Mobile War Saga----Gundam W" has attracted younger fans,Sunrise has no intention to abandon the old ones who prefer the original universe but to avoid further confusions created by the ever expanding original series, they planned another sidestory set in U.C.0079 as the link besides using the convenient plot holes left by "Mobile Suit----Gundam".Here's the story in summary:

As the world turned their attentions towards Amuro Rey,his Gundam & White Base, other areas continue on to fight the smaller scaled wars against Zion military with a South American base about to receive some new recruits from space.Among the recruits were the lead,Shiro Amada,a charismatic soldier with a strong dislike towards Zion military after he saw the devastating effect of G3 poisoning in one of the space colonies but that was about to change when he tried to save a soldier,Sanders Junior, who was being hunted down by a Zaku.

Shiro might had bought some time for Sanders to escape but his militarised Ball exploded with that Zaku in an intense fight with him being surprised to discover that his enemy was a female pilot called Aina Sahaleen yet despite of his strong dislike towards Zion military,he instinctively attended to her injury with himself not knowing why he would want to help the enemy he disliked. With the air supplies running low and with no Mobile Suits to contact their allies, both of them worked together and successfully attracted the attentions of both sides with both believed that they wouldn't see each other again after being rescued.

With himself being touched by Shiro's great courage,Sanders constantly defended Shiro when most of the soldiers looked down upon Shiro for his lack of combat experience in the environments dictated by gravity but time from time,Shiro not only proved them wrong and even successfully negotiated with the local guerilla leader to defeat one of the Zion posts together until they faced a formidable Mobile Armour known as Apusarass. When Shiro & his team received a leaked information about the new weapon, they were immediately felt overwhelmed by its scale with Sanders gone berserk as he feared that he might lead his new team mates to their deaths as his previous team mates had that earned him a nickname,Grim Reaper, since he was always the only sole survivor.Fortunately,Shiro determined to prove Sanders that it was never his fault for those deaths and defeated Apusarass.

With this MA proved to be a great threat,Shiro was ordered to hunt it down but he never expected the pilot happened to be Aina before the loss of control sent both Apusarass & Shiro's Gundam all the way to icy land. While waiting for the rescues,Shiro managed to expressed his feeling to Aina as he never stopped thinking of her since then but Aina's concern of her unstable genius brother, the designer of Apusarass, prevented her from running away with him and this encounter had the Federal military questioning Shiro's ability to pull the trigger when he encounter another Zion soldier again. With the project still in the questionable state,it was inevitable that the Zion military officer proposed to scrap the development of MA which had Ginias,Aina's brother, executed everybody in the base before they could report the decision to Deikin Zabi.

Determined to redeem himself and to protect his dream,Ginias unleashed his Apusarass II and planned to destroy the base Shiro was assigned to with Aina agreed to help protecting his dream. With Apusarass II surounded by the like-minded,faithful soldiers,it was a great fight between both sides before Shiro finally reached the cockpit of Apusarass II but only to find Ginias took Aina as his hostage so began a psycological battle between himself & the unstable Ginias, with Aina decided to betray her brother who she always defended until he took her hostage. In the confusion,Apusarass lost control and crashed into a nearby mountain with Shiro being reported missing in action after his team mates were not able to find him but at least, allowed both Shiro & Aina start afresh as both sides had stopped looking for both of them.

Since "Mobile Suit----Gundam",numerous sidestories have been developed to fill in the plot holes or to answer some of the questions left by those plot holes, with "Mobile Suit----Gundam:The 08th MS Team" helped explain the origin of Mobile Armour as they suddenly appeared out of the blue in "Mobile Suit----Gundam" and even multiplying in numbers & types. In some extend, this could had been the happy ending for Kamiyu Bidan of "Mobile Suit----Z Gundam" as Shiro fell in love with his enemy,Aina,as Kamiyu fell in love with Four Murasame, but with both of them lived on to start afresh. One of the most common criticisms towards Gundam series had always been their lack of realism so Sunrise even added scenes to show how the soldiers maintained their equipment or surviving in diffrent environments such as rain forests & the deserts,as clearly demonstrated in the scene where they ended up in the desert when hunting down Apusarass.

Due to the realism shown above,"Mobile Suit----Gundam:The 08th MS Team" became another must have collection among the military fanatics since "Mobile Suit----Gundam 0083:Stardust Memory",as they are the ones criticised Gundam series for the lack of realism although the series itself still remained accessible by casual fans too.The series proved to be so successful that a movie version was made which viewed the story from the perspective of a reporter named Milla hence the title,"Mobile Suit----Gundam:The 08th MS Team:Milla's Report".Since Sunrise chose OVA format for "Mobile Suit----Gundam:The 08th MS Team" which allowed them to release an episode a month, they decided to use the time wisely and to strike the iron while it is hot with their next TV project in the form of the rather short-lived "Mobile New Century----Gundam X".

Side Note: Many fans somewhat believed that both Aina & Shiro were killed initially when the closing credit begin to roll after Shiro's team mates were running towards the wreckage of Apusarass II,unless they patiently sat through the closing credits that eventually rewarded the fans a short scene of Shiro & Aina lived on to start afresh.Perhaps the best aspect of the ending is that Aina would never leave him as she would continue to nurse Shiro who lost his leg from that crash. In some extend, this could have been the happy ending of "Zeta Gundam" if Mr.Tomino chose to spare Four Murasame instead of killing her off as he is guilty of with his other works. The title of this series referred to the 08th MS Team Shiro was assigned to.

Yeah this was one of the few Gundam's with a decently happy ending. As the original Gundam universe is truly the most tragic when it comes to ending a series :P

Focus can be an illusion any time i see her i lose it . . .

Amen to that otherwise the endings are more of bitter-sweet if not tragic, such as "Mobile Suit----Gundam 0083:Stardust Memory","Mobile Suit----V Gundam" & "Turn A Gundam".

I mean i know its war and all but gundam can be truly harsh killing off sometimes a majority of its cast just to make an impact. While other shows have killed off one character and had the same and sometimes even greater impact

The ending of Turn A Gundam wasn't that tragic. In fact, I think (regarding to the main cast) only a super evil mayor villain, an obese and beyond annoying secundary villian and a sympathetic (but psycho) villain-turned-to-good died in the last battle. And as far as the epilogue shown, all of the surviving characthers had a good ending. :)

Also Turn A must be one the Gundam with the lowest death-counts (I think Loran didn't kill a single soldier during the entire series)... Unlike my all time favorite (Victory Gundam) where almost the entire cast eventually dies during the course of the events; and the ending is even more tragic than Z Gundam, due lots of good reasons.

I want to watch this series so bad. :)

I've heard Full Metal Panic is actually based off this series, so I want to watch the original story, 'cause FMP dissapointed me a bit... Well, not quite, 'cause I didn't have great expectations about FMP in the first place.

Fortunatly, I've seen DVDs of the 8th MS Team around, so isn't a series difficult to find.

PD. By the way, I'm not able to catch it on TV; 'cause around here the only Gundam ever transmited on TV (and dubbed to Spanish) has been "Gundam Wing". :(

True and guess we have to point our fingers at Mr.Tomino for setting the trend. Then again,he even admitted that some of the violence in the series are somewhat unjustifiable even during the war, during an interview about his remade "Mobile Suit----Z Gundam:The New Translation".
:iconsomvold:
Some good points you made.I was referring the ending of "Turn A Gundam" more towards bitter-sweet as Loran was forced to break the bad news to Soshei after he chose Kyeru over her.

I heard that Mr.Tomino had gone through some rehabilatation after he was diagnosed with depression when he was directing "V Gundam",so I personally thought this depression may have affected him a little until he recovered & directed his "Turn A Gundam".
:iconsomvold:
I certainly hope you will enjoy it especially if you're a military fanatic. It may not be an essential sidestory like "Gundam 0083" but still a very good series nonetheless.

That's a good point!! But in the end, I think everyone found the happiness they we're looking for... even Sochie. Who knows, maybe she decided to continue with the militia business under the leadership of lady Borjano.

Victory Gundam and Turn A Gundam... There're like Tomino's "Hell and Heaven". The bloody-thirty and angerful Tomino against a optimistic and super-happy Tomino. And both of them are great in its own way. :) Somehow, I like V Gundam slightly better; but want to watch Turn A again in near future.
